Tuesday Talk…Does encouragement look different for different people?

Tuesday Talk is about YOU…
Every Tuesday we engage in one big question, topic or idea. You are invited to write in with a suggestion you want to share. I surely do not have all the answers but know that together we can generate some great conversation and have fun in the process. (Feel free to post your topics, questions, and your great thoughts in the comments below!) Together, we will stay informed and equipped about topics that matter!

Our contributor for today’s Tuesday Talk is Katie Rogers:

Katie Rogers - PictureMeet Katie: My name is Katie Rogers. I live in Forks, Washington and currently work at Forks Hospital. I’m currently working on being credentialed through the Assemblies of God. I co-teach a Sunday school class and lead Women’s Bible study.

Angela’s note about Katie: Katie will also be one of the 12 speakers at the 2015 HER VOICE Conference March 27-28. Come listen to Katie talk about: A Road Traveled Together, a Barnabas Story (her-voice.org). She is going to rock it!

Today’s Tuesday Talk Question: What are some ways you’ve learned to better encourage others, does it look different for different people?

When it comes to encouragement I’ve found that it’s not the same for every person. For some a kind word or note will do the trick but for others it’s coming alongside them in a project or prayer.

I’ve learned to pay attention to how they respond to various types of encouragement and what they react positively too. For one of my friends notes don’t cut it. But taking time away from everything and going on an adventure with her gives her the encouragement she needs.

One way I’ve learned how to better encourage individuals was by reading The Five Love Languages. This book gave the core areas that every person receives love and how to best encourage them in that area. It changed my entire view on how to encourage people right where they are at.

One last thing I’ve learned, giving encouragement is life changing but make sure your words and actions are genuine. That you don’t just say words or perform a task, do it from your heart that will mean the world to those you encounter.

A note from Angela:

Don’t you love what Katie had to share with us today? Thank you Katie!

Do you know what your love language is? If not, discover them HERE! It is fun and you will learn that humans by nature encourage others the way we want to be encouraged. For example: My love language is quality time. Therefore, in the past I always thought the best way to encourage people was to spend time with them. Not true. My husband’s love language is: Acts of service. He would much rather that I make him dinner or wash his car. Quality time is not an encouragement to him, it is actually draining for him.

The secret to encouraging others is to encourage them the way they want to be encouraged!

Truly rewarding when we can understand another person’s love language and encourage them in this way!
